Comments: I was an Air Force Security Police K-9 handler stationed
at Clark from March 1991 to November 1991. Your pictures and comments brought
back great memories. I arrived at Clark just in time to witness the Mt. Pinatubo
eruption (June 15, 1991). Needless to s y, it was an experience. I was only able
to enjoy the beauty of the PI for two months. After the eruption, it literally
became the "dark side of the moon." They evacuated the majority of the base
before the eruption, leaving only the "mission essential" p rsonnel behind (cops
and cooks!). I lived at the base of a large hill which might have been "Lilly
Hill." There was a bunker built into the base of the hill. Rumor had it that
they couldn't cut the grass on the hill because of the left-over WW2 ordiance.
did find what was left of a strip of .50 caliber machine gun ammo one night
while on patrol. The date stamped on the end of the ammo was '44! I have alot of
photos of the volcano eruption and the post-eruption damage to Clark. I'd be
happy to share them! Thanks for the memories! Albert Tam - 09/01/00

worked on FM Hill. Some of my co-workers painted "AACS" on the Lily Hill radome
one memorable night - it was quickly repainted by a crew flown in from
Japan. stan murch - 07/12/00

part of the world I used to read and study about when I was in school..I met and
married a filipina who worked on base there(do you remember the shop called
Narda's at the concession arcade next to the BX?..she worked in there..Narda's

I was a weather observer for the Detatchment 5, 20th Weather

her apartment in Angeles and cross th Abacan River with her belongings in her

and again in 1953 for 1 year. My father was a Master Sergeant and also was a
B-17 Pilot in WW2 in Europe. We lived in Dusty Acres (1st time) &Jr.
Officers Quarters off Dyfss Hwy. 2nd time we lived in the WW2 Field Grade
Officers Quaters a short walk from the Alcan site (thought it was a restaurant)
at the Telephone Exchange end of the of the Parade Ground. Behind our house was
a large field and a small hill and the fence. My buddies and myself found a lot
of WW2 bullets and 3 inch mortors from WW2. EDO and the APs also gave us a hard
time. The 2 nd time I was there I was in Mrs. Augustine's 5th grade Class. I
enjoyed catching bugs (the locasts, Horned beetles and the large water bugs).
Reading your Web Page Story sure brought back memories. I wish I go back there
again. I would also like to see Bagiuo again. I like the drive up there on that
VERY narrow road. The last time I saw the PI was when we left in 1955 when we
returned to the US so my father could retire after 23 years. I was in the US
Navy and commisioned the USS America CVA-66. I got out on 4-1967 with the Rate

Otis, unless there has been new information since I last contacted her.

Comments: that book was way too crass, I thought it would be a
wonderful sci fi about nuclear war and de- humanization, not a lousy fantasy
about rabbits. and not just that, but it was boring beyond belief! I can't
figure out how anyone could enjoy that sick and bo ing book, much, much less
millions of people! well, anyway, I am not offfensing you for enjoying the book,
I just diddn't like the book too much. Now something different: Have you heard
of Robert C. Obrien? He's my favorite author and I think one of the g eatest
authors that ever lived. If you have not read any of his books, please do! I bet
you'll like them more than Watership Down, or at least as much. the sad thing,
though, is that he is not a legacy, and not supersuccessful, although he
deserves to be ore famous and rich than Richie. not only is he not rich and
famous, but he died of a heart failure, which means he only got to write four
novels. the four that there are, though, are the greatest novels I've read. I
hope you'll like him too. CaRLa PaTriCia ReYes -

Comments: Wow! Talk about a blast from the past. My father was also
stationed at Clark from 58-60. I remember getting sick as a dog from those damn
typhoid shots; couldn't even lift my arms, being seasick as hell the first few
days out of San Fran, Angeles, the cool school bus ride to Wurtsmith from off
post, re ember, went past the main runway and now and again some f-100's would
lift off right over your head as the bus went by. Way too cool! When we got on
base; we lived about fifty yards behind the O club, just off the parade grounds.
I think that was an EM area, or mixed, but I lived in that O club pool. You ever
play on that shot up Jap tank that used to be up at Bagio? I remember in the cub
scouts, or was it grade school, a field trip down to Manilla where we got to
board the US Nautilus when she was in port. I remember being scared to death
after watching about ten minutes of the "Thing that wouldn't Die" and being in
the lobby with about a dozen other kids, phoning their parents to come get them.
Ah yeah, Clark AFB and the PI; some great experiences. Thanks for jolting my
memories. Scott Chase Sara Peterson -

Pampanga. Clark Air Base and the neighboring towns have radically changed since
the 60's. Although there are still calesas used on the streets of San Fernando,
these exist just to preserve the tradion l appearance of the capital. Jeepneys
are more colorful now. Buses and taxis are mostly airconditioned. Beer gardens
are now called karaoke bars. Kabarets are now disco houses. Try visiting the

Then he told me it was about rabbits. This piqued my interest so today I checked

much. Mostly, I read manuals, being a computer geek. But I really like the book,
Watership Down, and that lead me to looking up stuff on it, like your web site.
I think you really got something there which can spark more literary interest in
people like me, who, as a rule, don't really read many novels. In the music
scene, it's the feeling of "it's got a good beat and you can dance to it" that
gets to me. I know I'm really missing a lot by not delv ng into lyrics too much,
but I think I'm gradually gearing into that direction a bit more these days.
Good page you guys got, and I'll definitely check out your links! Thanks for

Comments: I was stationed at Clark about the same time you were. I
arrived in Sept. 59 and left in Mar. 61. I was an Air Policeman and our barracks
were at the base of Lilly Hill. I remember one time several of us had to look
for a hideout on Lilly Hill, I beleive ecause of a lot of missing supplies. We
found a cave at the base of the hill which I was told was used by the Japanese
during the war. We entered the cave which went in about 150 feet and then made a
sharp turn and we exited about 50' feet frome the entra ce. My partner said they
did that so there was a way to escape. We also found a cot on top of the hill
which looked like it had regular use. Other than that we didn't find anything.
Most of the time I patroled the flight line and remember finding 50 caliber
bullets laying in the dirt on the far side of the runway. Also the F100's
screaming by as they took off. I enjoyed your site. The way you discribed the
Phillipines and Clark was the way I remembered it also. Thanks Darrel Neil Goodhand - 12/21/99

about 1976 and every few years since (I only live about 20 miles away).
Unfortunately I don't have a scanner or I could send u quite a few more photos,
of the Down itself and of "Efrafa" (a rather unexciting crossroads of two
footpaths). Don't worry too much about trespass if you visit Britain again - if
you stray off the official footpaths the most they can do is ask you to leave
(unless you cause damage, or if it's a specially restricted area - military or
similar). I met Richard Adams in 1979 on a Demo against Canadian seal hunting
and had a chat with him - it was about the time that "Girl in the Swing" was due
out. Loved the book, loved the film, loved your site, don't think much of the
new cartoon though. cheerio, Mark Morgan Ballard - 12/13/99

church in Balibago in 1960 and headquartered his work from there until 1990. My
brother than replaced him and they are both currently working there. That church
is the one you have captured so wonderfully in our photograph beneath Mt.Arayat.
The missionary you heard thundering from the pulpit was a Rev. Fred Null-he has
gone on to his reward but every few years or so I see his daughter. I and my
brothers attended grade school and high school at Clark-for a pr ce!! Three of
us graduated from Wagner High School. Two of us in '68. That church is now much
larger and has all the peripheral buildings needed for a high school and
college. Dad also built a house behind the church building in 1966 for the
astounding su of $8000-it really was a nice home though! Also attended a Baptist
youth camp at the Jamboree camp you spoke of. What I remember most about that
camp was that all our drinking water was treated with clorox-we survived but
drank a lot of Pepsis! Your whol page was enjoyable and I thank you for putting

be able to SEE all of the fantastic places where the events in the book take

am 28. I read Watership Down the first time when I was a teenager for school. It
was one of those books I was "forced to read" in Junior High school, and that I
wound up liking ver much. I collect classic adventure and children's novels. One
day recently I was talking with a co-worker who is the same age I am, about
books we read when we were kids. He mentioned "the book with the rabbits in it!"
Ha! I had to think for a minute about what the title of the book was. I had
completely forgo ten about Watership Down so I immediately went out and bought a
copy of it, and fell in love with it all over again! I also found the sequel,
"Tales from Watership Down," which is also a fantastic book! Once again- thank
you for your photographs- I think the pictures are examples of how sometimes the
most beautiful things in the world are also the simplest! I love the outdoors
and countryside, and I hope someday to visit Scotland and Ireland- my ancesto s

luck dragon "Falkor," in the book The Neverending Story by Michal Ende which I
was reading at the time. A lot of people ask me about my screen name, so I
thought I'd share the tory with you. I also have classic adventure novels like

Comments: Thanks for the Clark page! It was really interesting. I
actually found you on a search for Richard Adams stuff, but your account of
childhood at Clark was wonderful. I was a child on an oil company base in
Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and I was cracking up at some of the inevitable the
similarities. For instance, the strange fear of security personnel, the constant
danger of blowing yourself up (for us it was fireworks that had been smuggled in
from Europe, not legal in the Kingdom), and the fact that you rem mber having
tutti frutti shakes at the bowling alley. For us, it was one riyal shawarmas
(kind of like a gyros sandwich) at the bowling alley. I have often been struck
at how profoundly different the experience of being overseas is for children,
and the surreal atmosphere of a base or compound just adds to the whole thing.
Anyway, thanks. Ron Ballard - 09/06/99

strove for. I'd have to say that my favourite character was Bigwig. What is

Hey, cool website! It's hard trying to picture what the area looks like, but thanks to these pictures, I can see that it exceeds my expectations. I just read Watership Down for the third or fourth time -- I basically read for like five hour sittings -- th
t was how enthralled I am with the story. Those last couple of paragraphs where Hazel finds his peace are the most moving and emotional of the entire book...
My bro says that The Plague Dogs is even better so I guess that will be my next Adams reading. Great web page! See you later, and long live El-ahrairah! Glad to see your Westlake site. I have
been reading Mr W since approx. 1967, when
I was in high school. I have had the honor
of meeting him a few times and had lunch with
him at a conference by the simple trick of
pushing past everyone else to get to the
table first (it was worth it). He was also
kind enough to write a foreward to a book
I edited: Thurber on Crime, by James Thurber.
I may just have missed it, but did your
bibliography include his one nonfiction work
(not counting Elizabeth Taylor...)? I am
referring to the magnificent Under An English
Heaven, circa 1970. I am on my 3rd copy of
that book, having loaned out two and never
having gotten them back.
Glad to see another librarian on the web!

Cool site. I've been a Westlake/Stark fan for so long, and have collected as many of his books as I can find. Quick question: Where the hell can I find a copy of "High Adventure"? I've scoured used bookstores for years. I've tried to email Mysterious
Press, but their website is less than friendly in regards to communicating. Anyways, keep up the great work. Once a book is out of print, publishers don't want to talk about it. You might go to your library and look for a journal call
AB Bookman's Weekly. That is read by every used book dealer in the universe. I think you can place a one-time ad, and you should hear from multiple sellers. Terry

For years my mother has ragged me about reading Watership. Finally I bought a used copy at a yardsale and decided to give it a go. I am a french tutor, twenty years of age, and have alot of free time inbetween teaching and taking classes. I started Wat
rship Down on Dec. 5th, 1998, and I finished it on Dec. 7th, 1998. I could hardly put it down. Everyone I spoke to, I asked them if they'd read that wonderful book. I am a harsh critic of everything, but I have only good things to say about Richard A
dams and his masterpiece. I have since read the book another time and can't wait to read it again after the next book I'm currently readin...A Confederacy of Dunces. It's unusual, but well written. Thank you for your site dedicated to Watership Down.

Thank you so much for establishing a little shrine to Eric Rohmer, my favourite director and a great artist who has (sadly yet predictably) barely scratched the surface of North American popular conciousness. I've loved the man's work ever since I first s

Your comments on Clark were great! I lived there from 1961-1963. I lived at 5459 Daily Street also located at the bottom of Lily Hill. We lived there when they filmed the movie Merrills Maraders (mispelled). My father worked in the Radar site you talk
d about at the top of Lily Hill. The road from that site came out in front of our house so he walked to work everyday. It wasn't dismanted in 61, but the hill was burned down in 62. The airplane that the teacher got the serial number from was indeed th
re. In fact the rest of the kids and myself spent many a hour there playing war. Unfortuneately we told two GI's about the plane and EOD came and removed it. I believe that Clark was by far my most favorite place to live growing up in the Air Force. I
really disappointed me when they closed it as I hoped to return some day. Thanks for the memories and the effort to display the pictures. Bruce L. Scheffler

My Spanish is from high school in 1967, and helped with a dictionary, it seems like the idea here is that I have brought dishonor to the good name of Eric Rohmer by asking goofy questions like Astrological Sign. I ge
this every so often, and here is my reply - it's my guestbook and I can ask whatever questions I feel like. The Rohmer page actually does bring in as much objective information as I can find about that director. Some people then go into the guestbook and
decide from the questions that I am a moron, and go away. It's their perfect right. Others like my pages and answer only the questions they like. Better yet. Otherwise, I'm under no obligation to tailor my guestbook to fit somebody else's idea of what sho
ld be an earnest and serious undertaking. People who still don't like the way I work are urged to follow Mark Twain's advice to a feisty copy editor - "Take out your mind and dance on it." Terry

e I came from. And this misunderstanding is one of the causes of racism in the US. I'm not saying that I'm rascist. I'm just saying that one shouldn't make fun of someone if they don't even know where they came from. I try to be friends with anyone whom
I like to be friends with, but I see it very hard to deal with the mainland people. Thanks for listening to my comments and thanks for sharing your as well as my memories in Clark...

Well, mom being mom, I did go see it. I'll be truthful, I didn't like the movie, but the idea of
talking rabbits, Bugs bunny aside, intrigued me. When I saw the book in the school library, I
picked it up. This was almost 20 years ago. In that time,

I've read about Hazel-rah, Bigwig and Fiver many times. The story has never gotten old. 20

Accessed your site - wonderful. I live in Basingstoke, Hampshire, about ten miles south of
Watership Down, so if you need any more maps, photos, or tourist info etc of our little local
treasure then please e-mail me. You're right, the down doesn't look l
ke it did in the film - a tree stuck on top of a hill? I don't know where they got that idea from.
Downs are not hills and hills are not downs - downs are flater and sort of taper off. By the way,
did you visit the 'Watership Down' pub? It's in the mid
le of nowhere so I expect you didn't. You need a compass and car to find it - certainly not for
tourists. Nice place though, very relaxing and quiet.

Watership Down is the best book I've ever read.
I read it for the first time in December '96, when
I was about 10 years old. By December '97, only one year later, I had read it 7 times and its
sequel twice. I also got my two best friends hooked on it. At the time, I have a 6 yr. old rabbit
named Blackavar. Before coming to live with me, he lived with a
other male rabbit who mutalated his ears. When I found him, I knew very well that this was the
rabbit for me-Blackavar. My friend's rabbit, who unfortunatly has stopped running recently, was
named Hazel. I guess it just goes to show how much we love Water
hip Down. We have recently been trying to start a Watership Down club. If you'd like to join,

Going through the site of Watership Down brought tears to my eyes. I couldn't believe I found
this site. Seeing the movie seemed like a reach into my memory. At age 8 I lived in a small village
called Ecchingswell, not sure of spelling, but my sister, mom a
d I would walk through the woods and fields and come out in Kingclerc. Only after seeing inside
the book cover the wee map that I realized this was where we lived after leaving Basinsgstoke
and just before coming to Canada. I would love to know if the vi
lage is still there. It was so nice in my memory. We lived next to a farm as mom worked there as a
cook for a Judge who owned the farm. In 1979 while a quick visit of England ,my relative drove
by the back lane that used to go to our home and it was grown
over, he said he didn't know how to get into the village. Mom died 2 yrs ago she would have
loved to see this. I will let my sister in Gaspe,Quebec know so she can go to my in-laws to go on
the site. Thank you a million on this wonderful trip to a bit of
home. I am 53 now but the bluebells, pimroses and farm that precious year makes me want to
know more about the village. I still have the movie of Watership Down but sent the book to my
sister.
Again, if you know of any sites on Basinstoke or the small area around Kingsclerc let me know
please.
From one very very happy lady,

Watership Down was a pivotal book for me in my childhood. The world of the rabbits, in many

I'm doing a report on Rohmer and your site was helpful because it's sort of a central place and it's
organized- not just a lot of random reviews of recent movies which is what you get with most of
the search engines. I'd have to disagree with your favori
e Rohmer movie order though - I wasn't crazy about Ma nuit chez Maud and I liked Pauline a la
plage (I like plot) - but I'm glad someone else likes his tales of four seasons because the critics
don't seem to. Also, your observation about the characters r
vealing themselves through their actions and not through their words is interesting - I didn't think
about it before but I agree, and I think that's especially true in the moral tales. Anyway, thanks
for taking the time to set up this site.
And thank you for the comments. If this site seems organized, I'll
chalk that up to being a librarian. By the way - Rohmer is the only director I can think of who had

Hey, just ran across this site and it brought back old memories. I was a student at Wagner from
67 to 69. I was in the 6th and 7th grades there. There were so many kids that school was in am
and pm shifts. I had the pm shift so I got to sleep late--bu
would have preferred the am to play longer. I was fat, wore the military issue black 'Buddy
Holly' glasses and my older brother and sisters were in high school and college back in the states.
At the time I hated being there alone and also read every Ar
hur C. Clarke and other science fiction thing I could get my hands on.
It's funny, some of the same stories you mentioned about the stolen fire truck and and what to do
if you were in a traffic accident offbase were still being passed around in the summer of 67. We
lived off base for a year and then on base. I remember wee
ly (if not more often) going to some potable water filling station and filling up these plastic 5
gallon carboys to take home. You saw everyone there. The best things were the outdoor movies
at the Bamboo Bowl and the Sunday night buffets at the Officer
Club (yeah, my dad was a pilot). Anyway, I too remember those pressure sensitve clovers, there
was a tree that did that too. Although I did not like the place at the time--years later I would have
liked to have gone back or been older to do more sight
eeing like you did. The only place we went as a family were to Manila to pick up our car. I
remember that the USA Emabassy people in Manila did not seem to like us. I went on a class
field trip to Subic Bay to swim at one of the beaches--got a scar fro
coral on one of my knees to this day. Thanks for the images!
...and thank you for sharing your memories. I too would like to go
back - maybe someday. For years I had recurring dreams about visiting Clark again.

I visited England last summer, and wanted desperately to visit Watership Down. But my only free
day for the trip was very foggy, so i didn't go. But on my next trip, i will DEFINATELY go
there.
I have a habit of taking my copy of Watership Down to every country i visit, and read a chapter of
it in a well known spot (ie. atop the Eiffel Tower) then i write the date and place in the back of
my book. Don't ask why, but i have to do it!
This is a great site thanks!!
Interesting custom - thanks for sharing that. Reminds me that I meant

I found this page to be very sad.Not sad in a bad way but in the same way I feel while listening to
the end of "shine on you crazy diamond pt.9".I haven't seen the movie in quite a few years, but
Iwill definitely rent it again;and I will DEFINITELY read th
book. I hope Mr.adams novel has the same affects on me as the works of Tolkien or Rice.(Yes
these affects were all positive!)and all that i've seen so far is the section on "watership down".

Thanks for the pictures of Watership Down. I've been telling my family for years that if I get back
to England, I'll seek out the places in the story. I'm glad to see that, yes, I really could find
everything. Watership Down is such a wonderful story.
I wanted to share it with my mother, who was blind, so I read the text aloud and taped it--the
book is quite thrilling when read this way, and getting the voices for the various characters was
fun, too! Anyway, great pilgrimage, and feel free to visit my
website, too.
I hope you make it - it is not only a place to see because you loved the
book - it is an extraordinarily awesome bit of countryside. For that matter, I hope I make it back
there someday. Terry.

In June 1997 I visited England and also sought out Watership Down. While certainly a pretty
place, it did not look very much like the scenario of the book to me--but perhaps that's merely my
inadequate imagination of it. I'm not surprised that other peo
le have made this same pilgrimage, considering that the book really is one of the great morality
plays of this or any other age. When I was living in Santa Cruz, California, some years back there
was someone there who drove a VW Beetle with the license p
ate "HRUDUDU"--was that you by any chance?
Regards, Chad Wozniak No, it wasn't me, but I'm glad somebody did. If I
can ever afford it, my vanity plate will read 'ABSURD.' Funny you should mention American
Graffiti. That was a movie that changed my life. Terry

Terry, I can't say how much I enjoyed your beautiful pictures and interesting story. (I was in the
Wagner HS class of 1963.) I always wished that I could have seen the PI earlier, as you did.
(Even as early as say the 1920's.) It somehow seemed fresher an
unspoiled by the rampages of the 60's and 70's which really took their toll on the natives and
exploited them mercifully. Thanks for the memories. My best, Gerry
Gerry - thanks for the comments. It's notes like yours that have helped me
et more pictures from Dad. I'm often amazed by the response to that subpage, I think I know why.
I went for 30 years without knowing anybody outside of my family that had lived in this place, so
there was nobody who understood the experience. Now, thanks
o the internet, those of us who want to talk about this have a real outlet, and Wagner/Wurtsmtith

Your article is quite moving; very interesting experience at Clark AB. I used to work at the
Central Civilian Personnel Office (CCPO), assigned to work on the Teachers' Back Pay
Recomputation Project, 3CSG/DPCI, till I left for Washington State in 1981.
Some of the names you mentioned sounds familiar, but couldn't recall exactly where from. I
reckon the old days seeing those familiar pictures in your story. I feel very emotional when I
think of what happened to Clark. I happen to meet some of my forme
officemates from CCPO here in Hawaii. They too have interesting experiences at Clark AB.
If you have to come back see Clark AB someday, you will be surprised. I came to visit in Apr 97
and stores are like mushrooms growing. I saw the former USAF Hosp where I was once confined
imagining myself up the 6th floor peeping through the window.
Thanks for sharing yours.

I loved your Watership Down Website. What a wonderfully emotional movie that was. I saw it as
a kid and thought I would do a search on the Internet to see if there were any sites and I found
yours. The real reason I did a search was to see if I could find
that song from the move. I'm not sure what the title of it is but it went like this: "Bright eye's,
burning like fire, bright eye's how can you close and fail? How can the light that burned so
brightly suddenly close and fail...bright eye's." Well at leas
it went something like that. If you know the title or better yet where I could download it...I
would be much appreciative. Again, thanks for all the great pictures and memories of a terrific
movie! Will
The name of the song is "Bright eyes," and it is on the Watership
Down soundtrack, which was unfortunately never released on CD to my knowledge. I think the
song was included in at least one of Art Garfunkel's solo disks. Terry <

TRUE LIFE STORY
Dear Mr Rohmer:
I have written a book called: The Escape: from Kiev to
Tel-Aviv - which was published in the USA. It is based on a
true story of a man who succeeded in escaping from the USSR
in 1973. The story was covered at the time by major
newspapers, such as the "New York Times", the Israeli
newspaper "The Jerusalem Post", and others.
Several critiques recommended that I approach professionals
of the film industry to check the possibility of production.
Would you be interested in this book? I believe it is quite
promising as raw material for a good script.
I look forward to hearing from you .

Terry, I was stationed at Clark AB from June 1969 until Nov 1973. I was there with my wife and three children. Just wanted to let you know that not much had changed from the time you were over there. I really enjoyed it over there and did travel a lot aro
nd the island. Jan Hay was beautiful as was the city of Baguio. My kids learned an awful lot over there as I did also. I have many very good and some not so good memories from over there. Thanks for the memories and photos. I have a lot of photos myself a
d I will never forget the place. Have a good life.
Take care.

Your sight is fascinating. I recently read Watership Down, and was given the opportunity to write a brief essay on the use of language in the novel. I did not know there would be so many literary sites available about this incredible novel. I never tho
