Great page! My father was stationed at Clark A.B. from

We then moved into a Casa on base and I went to both Wagner M.S. and H.S. Your
page is great and I love those memorie . I remember the chili cook-off in front
of the Silver Wing, how nuts we got when they built a McDonalds outside the Main

Falls, Corregador. Thanks!

the BEST education at those schools on base. But they also grew up quick because
I insisted to live off base.It was also Mt. View and down towards Angeles ,can't
recall the name but it had a large hotel at the entrance. The thing most
remembered was swimming anytime, the nice people and the crooks also.We would
visit the different barrios including the Negrito village.I still have a sword
some of the people gave to me when we last parted. We were concerned about the
people there since they were on the bank of the Negrito river when we heard of
the volcanos wrath on all these people in that area.I have been looking for
sights of before and fter photos and info on what is currently happening in the
area.We saw very little on the news about the clark area except the
evacuation. What happened to that brand new commisary ,NCO Club, the Airmans, the

I was an Air Force Security Police K-9 handler stationed
at Clark from March 1991 to November 1991. Your pictures and comments brought
back great memories. I arrived at Clark just in time to witness the Mt. Pinatubo
eruption (June 15, 1991). Needless to s y, it was an experience. I was only able
to enjoy the beauty of the PI for two months. After the eruption, it literally
became the "dark side of the moon." They evacuated the majority of the base
before the eruption, leaving only the "mission essential" p rsonnel behind (cops
and cooks!). I lived at the base of a large hill which might have been "Lilly
Hill." There was a bunker built into the base of the hill. Rumor had it that
they couldn't cut the grass on the hill because of the left-over WW2 ordiance.
did find what was left of a strip of .50 caliber machine gun ammo one night
while on patrol. The date stamped on the end of the ammo was '44! I have alot of
photos of the volcano eruption and the post-eruption damage to Clark. I'd be
happy to share them! Thanks for the memories!

Loved reading and viewing your site. My family was
stationed at Clark from '75 - '80, and it was truly the best time of my life.
When Pinatubo blew it's top, I sobbed, feeling as though my boyhood hometown was
effectively wiped off the face of the earth. eeing pictures such as the one of
the Kelly Theater post volcano, really makes me sad. I fly for Northwest
Airlines, and will always regret that I didn't go back to Manila before the
disaster, to check out the base. Maybe it's true waht they say though .. you can
never go home. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Ritchie

I was stationed at Clark Air Base from January 1989 thru
February 1991...this experience forever changed my life...had a chance to see a
part of the world I used to read and study about when I was in school..I met and
married a filipina who worked on base there(do you remember the shop called
Narda's at the concession arcade next to the BX?..she worked in there..Narda's
made handwoven items such as wall hangings, purses, and other decorative items)
I was a weather observer for the Detatchment 5, 20th Weather
Squadron..thankfully, I left a few months before the destructive eruption of
Mount Pinatubo..unfortunately, my wife(not at the time, though) had to evacuate
her apartment in Angeles and cross th Abacan River with her belongings in her
backpack..she graduated in 1995 from Angeles University with a B.S. in Nursing
and works as a Registered Nurse here in Massachusetts. I work at the weather

I was a dependent on Clark Air Base in 1948 for 18 months
and again in 1953 for 1 year. My father was a Master Sergeant and also was a
B-17 Pilot in WW2 in Europe. We lived in Dusty Acres (1st time) &Jr.
Officers Quarters off Dyfss Hwy. 2nd time we lived in the WW2 Field Grade
Officers Quaters a short walk from the Alcan site (thought it was a restaurant)
at the Telephone Exchange end of the of the Parade Ground. Behind our house was
a large field and a small hill and the fence. My buddies and myself found a lot
of WW2 bullets and 3 inch mortors from WW2. EDO and the APs also gave us a hard
time. The 2 nd time I was there I was in Mrs. Augustine's 5th grade Class. I
enjoyed catching bugs (the locasts, Horned beetles and the large water bugs).
Reading your Web Page Story sure brought back memories. I wish I go back there
again. I would also like to see Bagiuo again. I like the drive up there on that
VERY narrow road. The last time I saw the PI was when we left in 1955 when we
returned to the US so my father could retire after 23 years. I was in the US
Navy and commisioned the USS America CVA-66. I got out on 4-1967 with the Rate
of RD2. I live in southern Oregon. Have a great and safe day, Jim Latham

I grew up in the Nashville area where many of the
Ballards seemed to originate before moving on. My gr. grandad was Warren Baxter
Ballard. I have a picture of him, but not your Thomas Almon. If I have read the
data correctly, Warren and Thomas had differ nt mothers. You might want to check
with Susan Wolfe about the name of the earliest Ballard, I think it is Owen, not
Otis, unless there has been new information since I last contacted her.
Obviously we are cousins of some degree since Walter Alvis is my gg grandfather.

My Mobile Construction Battalion, MCB 10, was assigned to
build dependent housing in USNS Sangley Point in 1963. We built about 35 units.
In about 1970 the base was turned over to the Phil Armed Forces. I enjoyed the
"PI" so much that I went back later nd married a Filipina.
I'd like to go back - at least for a visit.

I wanted to see your page as I grew up in Clark AFB in
1984-1987, off base for one year then we moved down the street from the
General's house near McArthur Elementary. I remember having a few maids that
baked the best homeade bread ever and going to the pool down the street and
having pizza and virgin strawberry daquaries. I also remember when the
Challenger exploded and the pictures of the astronauts were put up around the
school. Just a few memories I had to share with a fellow Air Force brat
:)

I appreciate the work that you've done and sharing at
least some memories, though my experience was obviously different from yours,
since I was an enlisted man. My best friend from Air Force days recently moved
here. He pointed the Clark site out to me in an e-mail note this evening and
I've spent hours checking things out -- your part is fine! Thanks! I was at
Clark from June 1958 to July 1960 with the 6924th RSM (AF Security Service). I
also worked for quite awhile at AFRTS, beginning as a dj and ending as sports
director. Dick Whenry and I did play-by-play of football games from the Bamboo
Bowl -- th I hadn't remembered that it had a name. After getting out of the AF
in 1960 I went to college at Wake Forest U. and then to grad school at Stanford
where I got a Ph.D. in Chinese history. I've been teaching at Wake Forest since
1968.

that book was way too crass, I thought it would be a
wonderful sci fi about nuclear war and de- humanization, not a lousy fantasy
about rabbits. and not just that, but it was boring beyond belief! I can't
figure out how anyone could enjoy that sick and bo ing book, much, much less
millions of people! well, anyway, I am not offfensing you for enjoying the book,
I just diddn't like the book too much. Now something different: Have you heard
of Robert C. Obrien? He's my favorite author and I think one of the g eatest
authors that ever lived. If you have not read any of his books, please do! I bet
you'll like them more than Watership Down, or at least as much. the sad thing,
though, is that he is not a legacy, and not supersuccessful, although he
deserves to be ore famous and rich than Richie. not only is he not rich and
famous, but he died of a heart failure, which means he only got to write four
novels. the four that there are, though, are the greatest novels I've read. I
hope you'll like him too.

Wow! Talk about a blast from the past. My father was also
stationed at Clark from 58-60. I remember getting sick as a dog from those damn
typhoid shots; couldn't even lift my arms, being seasick as hell the first few
days out of San Fran, Angeles, the cool school bus ride to Wurtsmith from off
post, re ember, went past the main runway and now and again some f-100's would
lift off right over your head as the bus went by. Way too cool! When we got on
base; we lived about fifty yards behind the O club, just off the parade grounds.
I think that was an EM area, or mixed, but I lived in that O club pool. You ever
play on that shot up Jap tank that used to be up at Bagio? I remember in the cub
scouts, or was it grade school, a field trip down to Manilla where we got to
board the US Nautilus when she was in port. I remember being scared to death
after watching about ten minutes of the "Thing that wouldn't Die" and being in
the lobby with about a dozen other kids, phoning their parents to come get them.
Ah yeah, Clark AFB and the PI; some great experiences. Thanks for jolting my
memories. Scott Chase

I believe your story. I was born and raised in Arayat,
Pampanga. Clark Air Base and the neighboring towns have radically changed since
the 60's. Although there are still calesas used on the streets of San Fernando,
these exist just to preserve the tradion l appearance of the capital. Jeepneys
are more colorful now. Buses and taxis are mostly airconditioned. Beer gardens
are now called karaoke bars. Kabarets are now disco houses. Try visiting the
place once again. I'd love to read a sequel to your story.

I'd never considered reading Watership Down until a 7th
grader in my Religious Ed class said it was her favorite book. I asked my
husband about the book, and he said I'd probably not like it because it's sad.
Then he told me it was about rabbits. This piqued my interest so today I checked
the book from the library. 10 chapters into it I had to tear myself away to do
housework.... I was worried I wouldnt be able to read the whole book in time to
return it, but I dont think that's going to be a problem! I'm just starting it
really, and it's totally fascinating. I love the pictures on the website. It'll
help me imagine the scenes all the more.

For me, it's odd, being a musician, to dig a book so
much. Mostly, I read manuals, being a computer geek. But I really like the book,
Watership Down, and that lead me to looking up stuff on it, like your web site.
I think you really got something there which can spark more literary interest in
people like me, who, as a rule, don't really read many novels. In the music
scene, it's the feeling of "it's got a good beat and you can dance to it" that
gets to me. I know I'm really missing a lot by not delv ng into lyrics too much,
but I think I'm gradually gearing into that direction a bit more these days.
Good page you guys got, and I'll definitely check out your links! Thanks for
putting it out there! cisco..

found a cave at the base of the hill which I was told was used by the Japanese
during the war. We entered the cave which went in about 150 feet and then made a
sharp turn and w
